Arizona and Oregon and Colorado are suffering devastating losses. But the numbers on the other teams don't necessarily show the full impact. At Oregon State and Utah key players are leaving, and we (Stanford) are losing all of our depth at point guard.
Utah, Cal, Oregon State, Colorado, and Oregon are each the beneficiaries of at least one transfer from within the Pac 12, which helps offset some of the losses.
I don't think that even pro teams have this much shuffling on average--at least not as much as the likes of Colorado and Arizona. It is positively ridiculous.
1) It will dramatically reduce the incentive of coaching staffs to invest time in player development and shift the emphasis from "teachers of the game" to coaches who invest much more of their time in recruitment. Particularly recruitment of transfers.
2) Piecing together a dramatically new team each year will shift strategies away from intricate offenses that must be learned and practiced over more than one year to individual talent. Expect team assists and balanced scoring to go down and individual stars to be featured more.
Tara's strengths are 1 and 2--to the extent Stanford is immunized against the transfer virus these may continue to be a strength for us, but JVG suggests that even Stanford and Tara are not completely immune.
Graves and Oregon are, I think, a good indicator of how things are going. Not only did he lose 5 to the portal this year, but he has been having an increasing number of transfers out and in the last few years, and it shows in his results. Oregon has underperformed its talent since COVID cost them a good chance at a national championship, and I think their underperformance has been due to the constant churn on their team.
I think we can expect a lot more teams like Oregon, and a general decrease in the quality of college level WBB as the constant churn continues to ruin team chemistry and team strategy both. And that is all before the jealousies and narcissism of individual NIL deals begin to intrude on team sisterhoods. It is all very depressing for a fan to contemplate.
I totally agree. This is now the pros but worse, because it is a free for all, nothing binding anyone. I might as well just follow the WNBA.
