Shaw did a great job of carrying on after Harballs. He recruited well and was highly successful. But his reticence to vary, to take a chance in several crucial moments threw away the chance to reach the final height.
Shaw was never a builder, he was a caretaker and now he’s an older comfortable man who needs to use his parachute to do things like Ted Talks and draft acumen on TV. He needs not to be a football coach anymore.
Of course he is past his shelf-life and it's become painfully conspicuous. As hard to watch as his team. But he has wrapped his identity in what he does and is oblivious to what he actually is, which is a failing head coach. I've moved from frustration to exasperation to pity. Truly sad to watch him at this moment. Another celebrity who missed his chance to exit while he was on top. Dude needs an intervention. Fat chance, that.
Word's out in recruiting circles and we're seeing it in competitive mismatches. The Harbaugh Halo (followed by the HarbShaw halo) is long, long gone. He's now the Norma Desmond of college coaches.
Life is too short to waste on crap football.
