That player played in the NFL. Rodney never did.
Shaw did a great job of carrying on after Harballs. He recruited well and was highly successful. But his reticence to vary, to take a chance in several crucial moments threw away the chance to reach the final height.
Shaw was never a builder, he was a caretaker and now he’s an older comfortable man who needs to use his parachute to do things like Ted Talks and draft acumen on TV. He needs not to be a football coach anymore.
Of course he is past his shelf-life and it's become painfully conspicuous. As hard to watch as his team. But he has wrapped his identity in what does and is oblivious to what he is, which is a failing head coach. I've moved from exasperation to pity. Truly sad to watch at this moment. Another guy who missed his chance to exit while he was on top. Dude needs an intervention. Fat chance, that.
Word's out in recruiting circles. The Harbaugh Halo (followed by the HarbShaw halo) is long, long gone. He's the Norma Desmond of college coaches.
I will always appreciate what he did and what he accomplished. And I will not limit that by suggesting it was just all Harbaugh etc. But there is no question that his time has come and gone.
I took the position a couple years back that he earned the opportunity to show whether or not he can rebuild the program. He has had that opportunity and he has proven that he cannot. So the choice is simple. Either he goes or they continue to fade more and more into oblivion. My question remains as it has always been – does the administration give a shit?
I have his replacement. Deion Sanders. Do you want to make a splash? That’ll make a splash. And look what he’s doing at Jackson State. I have as much chance as being Stanford‘s head coach as Deion Sanders does. But I tell you what I’d love to freaking see it. Sanders is brash. To say he’s confident is an understatement. He’s also smart. And he would bring a completely different mentality into the program. I think kids would want to play for Deion. Never gonna happen. But man it would be fun to see. (He has said he will entertain Power Five jobs by the way.) Heck maybe Ronnie Lott would agree to be DC and or coach the defensive backs. Jerry Rice could coach WR’s. I mean it’s about time he gets a job so he doesn’t have to run up and down the sidelines at Levi with his GOAT cap on! And while I’m at a roll let’s have Dave Wyman to coach the linebackers. I don’t give a damn how much technical knowledge he has – although I suspect it’s fine. His mentality alone would be enough for me. Put 11 Dave Wyman’s on the field defensively and let’s see what happens. One can dream.
I had the same fantasy listening to him rockin' with the GameDay gang yesterday morning. Sanders is rough magic. He also uncommonly intelligent. And articulate (when he chooses to be, depending on audience). He seems like Denny Green with on-demand attitude. Overwhelming charisma. A rich man's Herm Edwards with prime-time star power. Slim chance Stanford would/could roll the dice but, as you say, one can dream. What we have now is something less.
We’ve been agreeing a lot lately Gail. It’s almost scary! :). Or, it’s so freaking obvious what needs to happen that even those that were at one time on somewhat opposite ends of the “debate“ are now in line. Maybe if nobody shows up for their next home football game they’ll be a change. Course they’ll be a couple thousand people there.
A month ago, I planned on the Wazzoo game. And a return after three years to Chuck Taylor Grove for a Gen. MacArthur moment.
No mas.
Life is too short to waste on crap football.
