Preview:
Stanford travels to Pacific--a fairly regular event in recent preseasons. Last year we beat them at Maples 91-62, the previous year we beat them in Stockton 104-61 in a nationally televised game celebrating Tara passing Pat Summit for the most WBB wins in history.
Pacific was not a good team last year, going 6-23. They do return their best players. Anaya James led them in scoring as a freshman, both for the season and in their game against us. She is a 5'9" guard averaging about 14 ppg and last year was mainly a slasher, but in her first game this year she also had 3/4 treys. Liz Smith is their second leading scorer, another 5'9" guard. They also have a sharpshooting senior from Australia, Sam Ashby, who made 40 three pointers last year, but they don't have anyone like CSUNs 49% three point shooter who we shut down last night.
Pacific does not have the height of a typical Pac 12 team, but they probably are a little better off than our previous opponents. One starter is 6-2, Cecelia Holmberg from Sweden, and she leads the team in rebounding. Elizabeth Elliot is 6-1 and strong, has won a number of conference awards. They will probably be at least a bit more challenging in the post than SDSU or CSUN--but just a bit.
Pacific is coming off a big win against UC Riverside, 83-61, which will certainly lift their spirits after last year's down year. James led them with 21 points.
