That's the longest field goal made in college football all season by five yards. Wow wow wow wow wow a million times. And it wasn't even a good snap. Coupled with his perfect kicking record this season, he's absolutely a viable Groza candidate, though I'd bet on Moody repeating or maybe Dunn getting it. But with a big game against BYU, Karty has a very real shot. Let's play for that. Elsewhere on special teams, Sanborn had net punts of 37 (to the 45), 53 (to the 14), 29 (to the 17), 36 (to the 12), 29 (to the 37), 30 (to the Stanford 47), 48 (to he 27), and 46 (to the 17). Again very active and solid, but I think he's had way to many punts between the 10 and 20 to consider this a good season. Just not a weapon and I think we can do better. Tremayne, who has been a massive disappointment at receiver, had a great coverage play. It brings me no pleasure to say this about my favorite walk-on in recent years, but Thompson has the worst ball security I've ever seen. Beyond bizarre to muff it every six times you touch the ball. Completely unplayable. Burning a redshirt for somebody to handle the ball like this sure is a decision, though also an indication of how injuries hobbled us at both running back and the return game.
12. Game balls: Leigber, Moi (PFF did not agree but will trust my eyes/box score), Karty, Gould
13. We're almost there, one more week of the nightmare. But for those of us who are year-round diehards it's not really the end of the nightmare unless Shaw goes. We had just as much of a nightmare last year. In some ways it was even worse. And yet we are where we are. There can be no hope for Stanford football until this regime is gone. I hate that we're going to have another game in which losing to a mediocre or worse team is actually a relief because it increases the odds of the nightmare ending. DSMG. Now.
Why is Thompson your favorite walk on in recent years? Tremayne is mine. I don't know anything about Thompson so just curious.
Just in terms of recruiting profile. It was nuts to be able to get him as a walk-on. On paper he profiled as a clear Pac-12 scholarship level player. The kind of profile we all would have assumed was a scholarship player until he said he wasn’t. We’ve had good walk-ons but I can’t think of one ever on this level. Again, on paper. He’s had a somewhat rough acclimation. Then again, a true freshman walk-on being the top return specialist is itself an unusual and telling circumstance.
