I think Darrin Nelson was the best football player in Stanford history (excepting Ernie Nevers).
That is a ridiculously grand statement, given Elway and Luck, but it's hard to overstate how incredible Nelson was at Stanford. The stats show that, but don't do him justice. Electrifying is the best descriptor: it was an absolute pleasure/thrill watching that guy play football.
(BTW, I'm equally content saying that Elway, Luck and Nelson are the best football players ever to wear a Stanford uni).
