What did Qatar do?
It engaged in the corruption with FIFA, paying the bribes to FIFA officials.
An estimated 4000 workers died building the amazing stadia in which the games were played.
It is a repressive regime, the details of which would run counter to the board rules, but there are lots of repressive regimes. Then it chaffed at team, players, and fans speaking up against it being a repressive regime.
Other than that, I am sure Qatar is a lovely country. You are probably right that the reduced travel burden is a good thing for players and fans.
