It is a repressive regime, the details of which would run counter to the board rules, but there are lots of repressive regimes. Then it chaffed at team, players, and fans speaking up against it being a repressive regime.
Other than that, I am sure Qatar is a lovely country. You are probably right that the reduced travel burden is a good thing for players and fans.
