Northern Idaho might as well have been on a different planet to me in those days--different time zone, terrible highway connection, and quite different economically and culturally too.
Coming across other people from Idaho--from any part of the state--has been a very rare occurrence for me ever since I went away to college. Somewhat interesting (though not exactly a shock) to find out there is some kind of mini-community of Stanford people with Idaho connections. Stanford has always drawn well from the intermountain west, as the nearest elite university.
And, of course, to make this relevant to Stanford WBB: Tara got her coaching start at the University of Idaho, going 42-14 over two years.
I grew up in St Maries which is a lumber town with a large plywood mill. The population now is similar to what it was when I was in high school. (It is off the main highways and accessed only by boat from Coeur d'Alene or a few crooked, mountainous roads. Took us 16 hours in a school bus to get to the state basketball tournament in Pocatello, and we went through Montana to get there.
Went to The College of Idaho before transferring to Stanford in the early 80's. I knew about a half dozen other students from Idaho when I was at Stanford. There were not many of us.
Did not know that Tara had started her coaching career at Idaho. Great piece of trivia.
