If stanford actually won or contended for championships recently in football or basketball, it wouldn't be in this position.  Most of the country doesnt care about college water polo, gymnastics, golf, tennis, etc.

I’m afraid that even a stronger MBB program wouldn’t have helped our current predicament. It’s football and only football that drives the current money train in college athletics. If MBB actually mattered, programs like Gonzaga, UConn and San Diego State would have seats at the big kid table, too.
