As for the Shaw interview, a few thoughts (focused on the Stanford related portions, not the pac 12).
I am reminded that whatever his faults as a coach, Shaw is very intelligent and well spoken. We will miss having him as a face of the university.
He gave an abundance of credit for Our 2010s success to Etchmendy and Bowelsby for their investment in and support of our football program. The unspoken but implied part was that conversely, MTL and Muir bear significant blame for the decline. Part of me wonders if part of Shaws hesitance to replace Pritchard or other assistants was a lack of financial commitment to finding better replacements.
To that end, he spoke to the changing environment of the transfer portal and NIL, essentially condemning Stanford for being behind the eight ball and not leading from the front in finding new and creative ways to make the best of the situation. Again some critique implied at university leadership.
Finally he spoke about himself stepping away. Some prescient paraphrasing of Bill Walsh about the difficulty of sustaining success over long periods of time, which is clearly true in college football. He also seemed to say that the University needs a new approach to stay relevant in the current era (which is true) and that would best be spearheaded by a new coach, which I also agree with.
I was always more of a Shaw fan than most on this board. He brought us the best success Stanford football has ever known. But we obviously also eventually stagnated and then declined. This decline was multi factorial. Talent drain in coaching. Gradual erosion of our talent Pool from transfer portal being a one way street. NIL. Schematic advantages from other schools. But we are seeing this year it's not as simple as installing a more modern offense that will fix our woes.
For those expecting a Shaw "I suck and this is all my fault" interview, you are going to be disappointed. I didn't need or expect that. I would have liked a few questions on what in hindsight he would have done differently over the past few years.
Shaw was an excellent steward of the program during our good times. Sadly, to achieve such success again is going to require swimming against the current, and the attitude needed to rally others to do so, which Shaw lacked at this point in his career. Here's hoping coach Taylor has EUTM in his DNA, because that's probably what it's going to take to make a difference.
Apparently you missed tonights game. Shaw's excellent stewardship of the program left it where it is today. To achieve success again, will require someone who is a leader as you describe. To your point though. Shaw has no leadership in this point of his career.
Free Phogge!!!! And no, crimson doesn't refer to the Tide.
