Were the last few years rough? Absolutely. Was it past time for him to go when he finally did? Yes. But the three conference titles, two Rose Bowl wins and four top 10 finishes represent some of the best memories of my experience as a sports fan. I get the feeling some people on this board would trade those for a few more Blockbuster Bowls in the later years.
It's not getting old. It has been old. For quite some time now.
However, it will continue for as long as people start threads like this. I would suggest that anyone who is bothered by it avoid these types of threads.
College football coaching is very much a what have you done for me lately gig, and once you get to the pinnacle you are expected to stay there.
If you don't you are a bum or at best a has been. Shaw was lucky Stanford allowed him to stay around and collect multimillion dollar paychecks while he was putting up 4-8 and 3-9 records.
Shaw is definitely correct in saying that continued success is extremely difficult to achieve at Stanford, and that is probably one reason why so many of his predecessors jumped ship once they had some. I always admired Shaw because he was willing to stay around, but it did not end well.
