This is a generational thing, of course, as well as an emotional one. To me, and many others of a certain age, there is but one and only one Stanford QB on whom we place the golden laurel wreath. There is only one Cardinal Highsman Trophy recipient and Rose Bowl Champion who also wears two Super Bowl rings. Everybody's All-American. First name Jim. Surname Plunkett. The Greatest of All Time. There is no question, no doubt and no argument. Case closed.

These historical comparisons are inherently unfair.  Plunkett vs. Elway vs. Luck.  Being a great college football quarterback means different things in different eras.  Each of those three was a truly great college quarterback, each well suited to their era and to their teams and to the strengths and the weaknesses that surrounded them.
