UC Davis comes to Maples at the awkward time of Wednesday at 1pm. It is not televised but Stanford promises to livestream it:

Tara has a relationship with Aggies coach Jennifer Gross. Gross has been at Davis for 12 years and became very successful there by implementing a highly sophisticated version of the Princeton offense. When Tara decided to move Stanford to the Princeton in the last decade, Gross and her assistants visited Stanford and helped educate our coaches on the finer points of the system.
Since then we have played Davis somewhat regularly. For some reason we did not play Davis last year, but we did in 21-22, beating them 68-42 at Maples. Jump had 17 points and Brink 11 in that game. The 20-21 matchup was cancelled—probably with Davis COVID protocols. In 2019 we defeated Davis 67-55.
When we play them, both teams tend to know each other’s plays, which makes for interesting defenses. Davis has sometimes used a weird “junk” zone defense that has slowed us down, but with Davis using a time consuming Princeton offense and throwing a creditable defense at us, the games have not been high scoring.
This year Davis is not off to its best start. It is 4-5, having lost to common opponent San Diego State, in addition to Pac 12 schools Oregon State and Washington State, among others. Massey has them at 172, which is marginally higher than Cal Poly and a lot worse than Portland’s ranking of 102.
Davis is led by 5’9” senior guard Evanne Turner, who we have faced at least twice before. She is hitting 43% of her three point shots, of which she takes about 6-7 attempts a game. She averages 17 ppg.
Davis has 6 players averaging 36% or more from three point range, 5 of them above 40%, and one (at only 6/11) above 50%. Clearly defending the perimeter is job number one on defense.
Locals will be particularly interested in redshirt sophomore center, 6’3” Megan Norris, from Menlo Park. She is hitting 56% of her shots and leads Davis in rebounding. She also can step out and has hit 7/17 three point attempts.
Davis rarely gives us a scare, but it always gives us a game with unique offensive and defense challenges. It will be fun to see the last tune-up before we head up to Cal next week to open Pac 12 play.
