If you're not a regular blood donor, you may not realize this is one of the seasons when donations fall off, resulting in blood shortages.
(Winter-time respiratory infections reduce the number of people donating)
Ten days ago, the Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage.
On Monday, Stanford Blood Center sent an email to donors indicating they had an urgent need for all blood types.
I've donated a number of times over the years to the Stanford Blood Center.
Most people give whole blood, which takes usually less than 45 minutes (about the time to watch a half of WBB).
If you know your schedule, you can make an appointment, but I usually do a drop-in.
If you're not sure if you're eligible to donate, full details are at their site. At one time, I thought age was a limiting factor, but I'm in my mid-70s and they welcome me as a donor.
If it matters to you, there are almost always give-aways for donating.
(shirts, etc. Currently, chance to win tickets to Disney on Ice or 2 nights at a Ritz-Carlson Resort.
But the biggest take-away is that you helped someone in need, giving something personal that can't be mass-manufactured or imported from some foreign country.
Please consider giving blood (this week preferably) at one of the Stanford Blood Centers (Menlo Park, Mountain View (near ECH), Dublin, (Campbell is closed for repairs)) or at a mobile donation drive. If none of those are convenient, consider giving to the Red Cross.
I second this opinion. Stanford Blood Center is my favorite place to donate blood. The staff is wonderful from top to bottom. I wish I lived close enough to regularly donate. What I appreciate is that you get a free cholesterol reading with every donation.
The contrast between them and what we have in the Seattle area couldn't be more stark.
Below is the what I got at the 2-3 gallon level. Unfortunately, I can't seem to post the photo so it will remain a mystery, but it is really cool.
