At first it looked like her knee was hyper-extended backwards, but they iced her calf below the knee and above the ankle as if no joint was involved. I'm hoping that is a good sign. Maybe a pulled muscle or a bruised shin?
1) The atmosphere of the game was the best so far this season, in my opinion. Hundreds of students, plus fans sitting all over the upper areas. Not used to seeing either. And the band, dollies, and cheerleaders were there. It actually felt like a college game.
2) The potential injury to Brink is deeply unsettling, but there is no cause to panic as yet. If it had been a tendon tear she would not have been biking, bouncing, flexing up and down on her toes, etc. That doesn't mean she will be back on Sunday, necessarily, but it did not look season ending.
3) The emotional roller coaster was so obvious in the game. Up 20-0, Brink goes out, we give up a 10 point run. Shades of Gonzaga hung over our heads. But the team got it back together and when Iriafen went out toward the end of the first half, leaving us with a much much smaller team than Oregon, we actually expanded our lead.
4) Oregon plays zone, and the chalk talk noted that we had been working on our zone-busting offense all week. It worked. Demetre and Iriafen were clearly the zone busters, taking numerous shots from the elbow. The mid range jumper in the open area is exactly what was needed, and Demetre in particular has the profile to destroy zones. Iriafen got around her taller defender when one-on-one several times, but she also took and made the mid range jumpers she needed to.
5) Star of the game was Lepolo. Second leading scorer and 3/6 from three point range. 8 assists to 1 turnover. And she defended Chance Grey. Now the defense was not always perfect, but holding Grey to 19 was actually an accomplishment.
6) I was happy to see Bosgana have a much better game. 11 points but more importantly was her defense on VanSlooten, who was only 4/12. She deflected balls and had a steal. Aggressive.
7) Agara just continues to impress. Six baskets in limited minutes and energy on defense.
8) The crowd gave Iriafen a standing ovation as she fouled out. 21 points and 15 rebounds, and much better defense than those 5 fouls would suggest.
