The shaky finances of the AD and the eternal problems with the Berkeley community (from the tree-sitters to the NIMBYs surrounding the stadium) are significant drawbacks to the 59er job. I'm not saying they won't be able to hire a coach, but the idea that the Jon Grudens and Chris Petersens of the world are going to drop everything to fill out a 59er application -- an idea widely shared on their message boards -- is ludicrous. Their best hope is to latch onto a Harbaugh, a capable guy coaching someplace small and/or unheralded. I'd be talking to that San Jose State fellow if I were them.

I know California and Stanford people make it a sport to put down and not take seriously the other, but Bruce Feldman reports Petersen is interested in two jobs: Oregon and California.

Berkeley makes a lot of sense for Petersen because he's from Yuba City and visits his dad there a lot apparently.  Plus, he started his career coaching at UC Davis, so he has ties to UC in his past.  I know the idea of Chris Petersen at California may not be a pleasant thought for Stanford fans, but it should be, because California and Stanford both benefit when the other is good in football.
