thanks for posting. fun to review that last tosu series. imo last-second failure seems more on coach ryan day. tosu had 1st and ten on the oregon 28 down by 1 with 34 seconds left. don't you run the ball up the middle 3x (or til oregon runs out of time outs) then kick a field goal? instead day calls 3 pass plays, loses 10 yards on offensive pass interference, and tasks the tosu qb with an impossible play with 6 seconds left.
And, Oregon kinda screwed themselves earlier in the game by going for 2 after a TD and also by not kicking a FG on 4th down on the 3 yard line. Those 4 points would have forced tOSU to score a TD at the end of the game to win it.
I was intrigued with the 12 men on the field penalty. Considering OSU’s field position, the lost time on the play (4 seconds) was far more consequential that the five yards they gained. It is unfortunate the Buckeyes were not given the option of putting the four seconds back on the clock or taking the five yards. Given that choice, they certainly would have taken the time and, who knows, maybe the outcome would have been different. As it was, their situation rated somewhere between extremely dire and hopeless.
UPDATE: Well, as it turns out, the 12 men on the field penalty was intentional. UO Head Coach Lanning put 12 men on D knowing the benefit outweighed the five yards OSU would gain.
I suspect we might see a rule change next year to prevent this from happening again.
