God and Man at Notre Dame
Interesting. The top two ranked universities not a member of the AAU are both Catholic colleges, Boston College and Georgetown.
Using which rankings? USNWR National?
Yes.
Let's see how those schools do in USNWR and in other rankings when compared to recent AAU inductee ND, to schools we know, and to perpetual AAU head-scratcher Oregon:
USNWR National
- Stanford 4
- UCLA 15
- UC Berkeley 17
- Notre Dame 18
- Georgetown 24
- USC 27
- Boston College 37
- Oregon 109
USNWR Global
- Stanford 3
- UC Berkeley 5
- UCLA 11
- USC 79

QS World University Rankings 2025
- Stanford 6
- UC Berkeley 12
- UCLA 42
- USC 125
- Georgetown 301
- Notre Dame 316
- Boston College 631-640
- Oregon 801-850
ARWU 2024
- Stanford 2
- UC Berkeley 5
- UCLA 15

- Notre Dame 301-400
- Oregon 401-500
- Boston College 501-600
- Georgetown 501-600
CWUR 2024
- Stanford 3
- UC Berkeley 12
- UCLA 17
- USC 53
- Notre Dame 192
- Georgetown 218
- Oregon 436
- Boston College 525
Forbes 2024-25
- Stanford 2
- UC Berkeley 5
- UCLA 13
- USC 28
- Georgetown 32
- Notre Dame 42
- Boston College 59
- Oregon 148
I think we might be able to assume that whatever criteria the AAU uses must be closer to the global rankings (USNWR Global, THE, ARWU, CWUR) than to the more famous national rankings (USNWR National, Forbes.) Though I'd be more confident in saying so if it were not for the continued membership of the University of Oregon.
But what I wouldn't do is read any slight aimed specifically at Georgetown or Boston College.
