Lay up after lay up gave them a big lead that we couldn't overcome. In our first meeting, Cal set a record with 18 three pointers made because we packed the paint and denied them the inside game. This time we defended the perimeter fairly well, holding them to 4/18. 4 is a lot less than 18. But the obvious counter was to drive past those perimeter players and score in the paint, which Cal did. Cal is simply a very talented and versatile team this year, and we found we could take away one dimension of their game but that they could then exploit the other.
What happened to Demetre? Bosgana didn't have her best game either. The refs were itching to blow their whistles on both teams tonight.
As for Demetre, I was wondering about her. She played only 7 minutes and did not score a point. At the end of the game when we needed a three point shot to get to overtime, she did not come into the game. No matter how badly she had played, she is the one player I would want in a desperation situation when we need a three. She must have been injured or she would have been in.
What I noticed the most about the game was the lack of assists. We had only 4 assists through 3 quarters, although we got a bunch more as we made our comeback at the end. But we could not pass the ball for a very long time. Running the Princeton without making passes is a formula for losing.
It was nice to see Alyssa Jerome and Fran Belibi at the game. I was half hoping that we could sneak them into jerseys, maybe along with Erica McCall, and bring them out to start the second half.
