A lot could go wrong, but isn't that the point? In the unicorn and rainbow idealized version of college athletics, the athletes are just random college students doing the same random and often stupid things other college students can do, like bet on professional sports. Why can't college athletes bet on professional sports if they are 21 or 18 in the handful of states (and D.C.) that allow it? Do college athletes need additional protection that 'normal' 21 year old adults don't? No one is talking about allowing betting on their own games, which turns out happens anyway and shut down a few programs back in the 'pure' '50s.
Ban sports betting on phones? Don't we have the god given right to do stupid ****? I mean you can still smoke or vape if you want; you just can't see Joe Camel on a billboard.
This train left the station long ago. I learned as a freshman that betting on horses in Louisiana was a sunk cost and I've never gambled since. Our morning routine on Saturdays is to go to separate gyms and briefly cross paths with yogurt or whatever watching Gameday on ESPN. My wife loved Corso and she's pretty savvy on all things college football. They were making picks and she said these guys know nothing about college football. I pointed out that some of these picks are against the spread. She said that is stupid; who cares about anything other than who wins? I said billions of dollars do.
