In a season where we easily could have quit we have kept battling. I heard going into the season that the team really liked Reich and the whole team had a better feel. Teams that stay together find ways to win games.
Big win for the good guys whatever the stats say. Big win for the program and gives us some momentum.
Would love to get Reich to stay...
I like Reich too but am eager to see new assistants and don't think Reich has been so good that we should want to go all in on continuity. Even with this win we are one of the 3-5 worst power conference teams in the nation. I am grateful for Reich's steadiness but want this staff replaced. I definitely do not want our offensive and defensive coordinators to be the level we roll with in the upcoming era.
Fundamentally, one good win should not sway us too much in this kind of strategic decision. We have beaten teams that beat great teams every year. We have seen signs of battling at various points every year. It's nice to hear that the team has rallied behind Reich, but unless there are signs of exit velocity from the echelon of college football we've been mired in I really don't want to double down on continuity. If anything I worry that Luck will assess things are on the right track and stay the course with regard to recruiting, assistants, strength and conditioning, etc. I don't think that's optimal when we're a mid-80s to low 100s team nationally. In other words, we suck. We need some pretty big change to get to the level we need to be.
For what it's worth, we beat 9 win Louisville in 2024, 8 win Oregon State in 2023, 9 win Notre Dame in 2022, and 10 win Oregon in 2021. We were a horrible team all of those years and those nice wins did not portend we were on the right track. It would be a terrible mistake to wishfully cast our best game or two this year as a sign we're on the right track.
