There is lots of data out there that shows that as you remove barriers and make gambling “frictionless” there is more of it, and that can be particularly bad for problem gamblers. I think it’s unlikely that gambling companies would pay tens of millions of dollars for ads in the Super Bowl or sponsorships of leagues if they didn’t believe that there would be a return on investment. Yeah, maybe even if you make it illegal gambling won’t go away altogether, but as a first step maybe don’t have in your face advertising all the time, don’t allow incentives to get people hooked, don’t legitimize it by having leagues give develop “partnerships” with gambling companies, etc. WIll there always be some gambling? Sure. But that doesn’t mean that we have zero agency and that we can’t curb the most pernicious practices.
