I'd like to equate Stanford with Uruguay except that Uruguay won the first World Cup. I'm not sure Stanford was instrumental in college football's development the way Uruguay was. After that first Rose Bowl, Stanford disappeared until the 1930s.
The US is a tough one. It's big and always had the resources to field a good side, but chose not to, and is now just on the outside of the great powers, kind of like a team that goes to a bowl, but never a great one. (hmm...)
