It's all little pieces that build up to the crescendo of the the 2009 "what's your deal."
I think you give too much credit to the impact Harbaugh's public statements about Carroll having one foot out the door. I'm sure he thought it was an inappropriate breach of coaching protocol, but do you think he really felt his recruiting potential was threatened by trash talk from the rookie coach of the perennial conference doormat ? I'm sure PC laughed that off in seconds with anything recruit/parent who may have raised it. Maybe if Harbaugh had said something like that in 2009, after beating U.SC so handily, it would be more than a nuisance, but in 2007, Harbaugh was not a credible risk to boys of Troy.
