But David Shaw could be a poaching target apparently. https://x.com/ReceDavis/status/1999538509573390680?s=20
While Stanford has admission requirements and transfer restrictions that made it hard to sustain OL dominance, Michigan certainly does not offer that challenge.
Michigan has/had a multi-decade legacy of using a powerful OL and big TEs. The focus on OL, TEs, and FBs literally has been the Michigan brand, and Harbaugh got a lot of his philosophy from his time at Michigan. Shaw is a viable option because he can credibly claim his system aligns with the roster as it exists today. If Michigan does not hire someone with some Intellectual Brutality cred, the roster will have massive transfer portal attrition 5 days after the hire is announced.
Obviously Michigan could recover in 2027, but Shaw is probably one of the few options that could help keep 2026 viable.
Michigan might be able to land a coach from the NFL, but the timing is awful as they best NFL options will not be available for a few weeks and by then the players on the roster will be too far into their portal planning.
Michigan did much better than Shaw with Whittingham. When I think of physical teams, Utah pushing Stanford around comes to mind. Current Michigan players also seem happy with the hire based on social media.
I do not think Shaw was seriously considered anywhere. Nor Tavita outside of Stanford.
