In any case I don't think anybody who saw Richard Sherman play CB in college thought he would be a Pro Bowl caliber CB in the league.
As mentioned he was terrible his junior year and pretty good his senior year, but he was drafted as a late round flyer CB who could match up against another teams big WRs. He wasn't supposed to be a starting CB in the league let alone the best CB in the NFL. He had the speed and the size to be good, but it is very impressive how his coverage techniques have progressed so quickly.
