Things I tolerate in the name of ultimate progress
Condoleeza Rice: Yeah, the TV bods fawning over her does get old, but sometime when you're laid up w/ a broken leg or something, go back and comb through old recruiting stories. The common thread is how amped-up recruits (and their families) are about meeting and spending time w/ Ms. Rice. Seems to be of particular value to out-of-state recruits. If it brings in more talent, let her good times roll.
"First Gerhart, then Harbaugh, then Luck..." Sure, that get's old to us die-hard fans, but the message is vital for our national recruiting. It's actually a great message to be pounding into the skulls of the media bods and having it come directly from the College Football Death Star, ESPN, helps reinforce our message. Also helps w/ recruits because other schools are spouting the same old blather about how it's all over now on The Farm. What was the phrase attributed to Lenin: "Useful idiots" ?
OTOH, I agree w/ JPRI: It's a larger truth that one never knows exactly which recruits will have monster college careers and which will not contribute. But I would send an envelope of cash to any prominent coach who said. "You know, we just got our asses handed to us in recruiting this year. One more recruiting class like this and we're done for."
