As Redrum alluded to, those messages aren't for those of us who follow the program religiously (and let's face it, there are only a relatively small number of us). It's for the rest of the population. And the Rose Bowl broadcast or some article about it could easily be the first time many in the general population thought about Stanford's staying power in that context or realized that Condy is even associated with Stanford, much less Stanford Football.
It's like advertising, right? There's no informational value in a commercial for someone who's already researched the heck out of the product in question but a good commercial could strike the perfect chord with someone as yet unfamiliar with the product.
