I think they were more than rumors.

It turned into one of the many reasons bear fans wanted Jeff to go.  Most seemed to believe Jeff did everything to get and then keep Allen.

If there's any truth to it, this falls on Tedford. No coach should let a player dictate these kinds of terms. I can see Tedford seeking Maynard so as to sway Allen to come, too, but beyond that best player wins. I personally think that if there'd been a QB ready to play and better than Maynard, that Tedford would've played him. In all likelihood Allen would've loved it, b/c then he would've been thrown to accurately and thus accumulated more receiving yards. I remember seeing Allen get pretty frustrated with Maynard's inaccuracy.
