Baseball charged students when I was on campus in the late 90's.
It all feels a bit penny-wise and pound foolish to be charging students anything, unless the ticket is in really high demand as basketball was in the late 90's. I guess you set an expectation that you won't always be a free rider, but in general, most teams would benefit from the atmosphere that more student support brings and enjoying the success on the field increases student bonds to campus.
I love the men's volleyball games for my family. The kids have room to run around in the upper deck, they have concessions, the students dressed in goofy costumes provide distraction during time outs.
