Next game. I'm taking the girls camping this weekend, so the game will be viewed during prime time Sunday night. It's going to be agonizing to wait and not check the score when we get back down to where there is a signal. Â
Despite many attempts, I've never been able to time shift successfully. Either the recording didn't work or I find out the result inadvertently. One particular example comes to mind, back in Singapore. At the time I was a Broncos fan because of all the ex-Stanford players. (you have to find other teams to root for when you are born into Bengals fandom). So the Broncos are in the AFC championship game. The game was on ESPN Asia tape delay. I spent the whole day avoiding the Internet and my American colleagues. I'm watching the game and during half-time, they show an ad for the Super Bowl XXXII: "Denver v Green Bay". I lost my sh!t. I immediately picked up the phone to call ESPN and left a profanity-laced voice mail.
I actually thought about time shifting the Arizona State game because I'd be at a bachelor party, but knowing my bad luck with time-shifting I didn't bother. The thought occurred to me that if I was ever going to be able to time shift successfully it would be at this bachelor party. All I had to do was survive a train ride back home without checking the score. Funny enough if I had tried to time-shift, it would have failed at the night club where the ex-Stanford players would have surely given away the result.

This won't be my first time. Being on the East Coast, I often wind up watching the second half of games in the morning. This happened with the ASU game - went to bed right after half time then woke up and watched the second half. That was an odd experience. (ASIDE: Imagine how angry I was after signing up for DISH network and the super sports package to get PAC12 Network and finding out after midnight that they weren't showing the SJSU game).
I've had a few bad tape delay moments. I was watching the Oregon game last year late in the fourth quarter and the scheduled DVR program stopped and it went live to post game interviews. Now I add 90 minutes to the end of the recording. Also, I grew up in Indiana and had to miss the 500 for the third time in 30 years because I was moving into a new house the day of the race. I had cable installed the day before and had the race recorded and decided I would stay away off my phone/computer the whole day while we were working with the movers until we could watch the race. Fast forward to late in the afternoon middle of the race and I'm on the couch in my new home throwing back beers with my wife and am in the absolute best mood. My wife asked a question (probably a science question) and in a moment of weakness I turn on my phone to see USA Today breaking news that Tony Kanaan has won the Indy 500 - who happens to be both my of our favorite driver. I had to watch the rest of the race not giving away that I knew that TK had won to not ruin it for my wife too.Â
I feel like a loser after reading Garvin's archived Big Game watching post. Â
