"But my philosophy is that if you're winning too often, chances are you're not setting hard enough goals."
Put yourself in the position of Admissions. The coaching staff is bringing you applicants that generally you're fine with and you already have cut athletes some slack when compared to the rest of the applicant pool. Then without consultation more applications that don't meet the standard you've been applying come into the office more frequently. Are you more likely to accept those, or are you more likely to sense that [whatever sport] has: a) lost its bearings and the way to readjust them is to reject more. b) worse, think that the coaches and athletics dept. is wasting your time, showing disrespect and trying to play you . What would be your frame of mind evaluating athlete applications in the future?Â
Right now there is a kind of harmony and cooperation. Example; because of LOI day deadlines, scholarship athlete applications get to cut in line. And, based on what leaks out from the Athletic Dept. side and the recruitnik world, guys who are close to the line get extra care in evaluation. There is even anecdotal evidence that athletes who were very iffy spoke with Dean Shaw and the quality of that interview/conversation tipped a decision in the athlete's favor. As I write this reports are that Admissions is holding the process so a non-scholarship kicker's final admissions package (delayed by Midwest school closings) can be pulled together and submitted. Our success rate is exactly that : success and messing with it doesn't seem compelling.
