And, of course, Ted Leland not only didn't get him, he didn't try. Still, the name Mike Leach was out there among those who wanted Stanford to stretch for something better than Buddy.ÂConsidering that most predictions for WSU thought a bowl game was a stretch (and that WSU would be fighting with Cal for the bottom of the P12N), getting WSU to a bowl game is a victory for them, just like Harbaugh getting us to 4-8 his first year was a brobdingnagian victory for Stanford. I don't know whether Leech will succeed long term at WSU, and obviously what he did against CSU was boneheaded beyond belief. But you talk about short term versus long-term benefits. Yeah, winning in the short term is the best path to a long-term success. But, in the absence of winning, it seems like Leech's schtick, if players buy into it, might be a pathway to success. Time will tell.
And, Mick. It's true that many coaches keep pushing the team, team, team while cultivating and buying into their own cult of personality. But only the ones who WIN get to keep indulging themselves and getting away with it. Now Leach is trying to peddle 6-7 record as the moral equivalent of an actual winning season. That works if the WSU team feels like winners and still buys in to the coach. With Leach...who knows? Maybe they do. Maybe Leach will be the scourge of the Pac North in the coming years. Any bets?
