My memory of his time at Stanford was that the first year after his switch from WR was a disaster. Every time he was matched up 1:1 on the outside with an above average receiver, I knew the ball was going that way and it would either be a catch or PI. He gave brobdingnagian buffers to the WR to avoid being burned and they would just catch the ball underneath for 6-8 yards. His second year he was better, maybe an average CB for college, clearly a step up from the defense we'd been playing in the late 2000's (Osaisai aside), but not anyone I thought would be an NFL prospect, let alone best CB in the game. Overall, I probably thought he'd made a mistake switching from WR where he'd shown some promise with pretty average QB play.
The story now is that his "fall" to the 5th round had to do with Harbaugh badmouthing him, but had he really done anything to show he deserved more than that? His athletic intangibles were there, so he was at least a project, but I don't remember anyone talking him up. His wiki page shows him having 6 INTs in his Stanford career, which is more than I would have guessed based on recall.
I'm just curious what other's of you remember of the legendary Sherman's time at Stanford.
I also wonder how he would have fared at WR with Luck throwing him the ball in 2009 and 2010.
He was projected higher than the 5th by some places.
Also, he switched to CB so he could play, supposedly Harbaugh wasn't giving him minutes on offense. I think that change makes sense, a WR who doesn't get any playing time probably won't get drafted, if they get into the NFL at all.
