I know that they had some World Cup matches at the old Stanford Stadium twenty years ago, but I guess the new stadium would not be an option for future World Cups/Olympics with its limited seating?

I believe the field at Stanford Stadium is too small to accommodate a World Cup soccer field. For FIFA international matches, the width of the field must be at least 64 meters (70 yards). The width of a football field is 48.8 meters (53-1/3 yards). I don't think Stanford's field is wide enough for a full international field, with adequate sideline space for the teams, medical staff, etc.
