The N.L. Chicago baseball team was originally the White Stockings in 1876, and were also known as the Colts (1890-1897) and Orphans (1898-1902) before new manager Frank Selee went on a youth kick, leading the local paper to referring to them as the "Cubs."Â Lots of NFL teams adopted the baseball name equivalents (NY Giants football), so "Bears" from "Cubs" made sense.
