A friend of mine did an interesting radio story a little while back about Monarch, the grizzly that's memorialized on the California state flag. The story involves William Randolph Hearst, a San Francisco newspaper reporter who was sent bear-hunting in Ventura County, and Golden Gate Park.

These events took place in roughly the same era that UC-Berkeley adopted its nickname; I'm not sure if there's a connection, though.
