The difference between any bowl game and the NCAA tournament is that a team can win a title as a low seed.  I believe Muir indicated that Dawkins need to get to the tournament, and that was accomplished.

FWIW - One of the big complaints about Monty's program was that the team was unable to find another level in March since they played at their peak all year long.  Here with JD I could imagine the team could play at a level far above their 10 seed for 2 or 3 games.  Admittedly, I can also imagine that New Mexico will win by 20 points on Friday.  And I suspect a 20 point loss to New Mexico is more likely than reaching the Sweet 16.

Here is a win-win for everyone - Imagine that JD takes the team to the Elite 8 or beyond!!  With that kind of run I would suspect that SEC or ACC teams might want to hire him ASAP, and then Muir would have to hire a new coach.
