There's nothing really cool or touristy about the immediate Palo Alto, mid-peninsula area. The back side of the campus, on the way to I-280 is a somewhat scenic way back to San Francisco. Depending on time, you may want to go "over the hill" to the Pacific Ocean. Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, or even a trip down to Monterey, Carmel, and Pebble Beach are great drives that are worth it if you have the time.
