We have been talking about making the jaunt to Stanford this fall and - as previously - are planning things way too far in advance but it's the off-season so what else is there to do?  A couple of questions have arisen as we are looking to plan out what we are doing.  I know that some may be hard to answer as we don't know the time of the game yet but any general guidance is appreciated.

• Are there designated tailgating areas on campus?  If so, where would you recommend?   
  
• Does thecardboard have its own tailgate spot or are most of you spread out?
  
• We are hoping to have time to walk around campus for a while as we've heard it's beautiful.  What buildings or spots should we make sure we visit?
  
• If the game is an 11:00 game, what time does tailgating start?  Likewise for a mid-afternoon or night game.
  
• Are there any rules or restrictions on tailgating that we should know about?
  
• Are there spots around campus that we should make sure we see?
  

Any other thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated.

Stanford's campus has no open container law, so you can drink anywhere. However, tailgating in practice (and perhaps in law too, I don't actually know) is contained to the football parking areas (as expected). If there's any area that's better for it than others, I'm unaware of it. However, if you drive, I think trailers are only allowed in certain areas. Gostanford.com should have all that information on it.

AFAIK we're all spread out, but it's possible that no one has invited me to the awesome cardboard tailgate because they hate me.

The obvious spots, like walking down Palm Drive and into the quad (if you want to try to find the kumquat tree in the quad I can point you to it), plus I'd go through Cantor (the art museum) if you can, and just wander around White Plaza. There's also some natural beauty in areas like Lake Lag (though at that time of year maybe not, depends on rain) and the cactus garden area.

Drinking bad beer is punishable by humiliation. Nothing worse than Lagunitas or Stone.

That is to say, none that I'm aware of. I see people grilling and drinking and setting up TVs and campers, if there are any restrictions it'd have to be things like "no fireworks" that ought to be obvious.

That was very vague and I am guilty of assuming that since I knew what I was asking, everyone else would as well.

Rephrased, are the other spots off-campus in the Palo Alto area that we should make sure we see?  We'll likely plan on spending all of Saturday in the Stanford/Palo Alto area, then returning to San Francisco that night.

Thanks for the info and the punishment for bad beer is definitely fitting.

There's nothing really cool or touristy about the immediate Palo Alto, mid-peninsula area. The back side of the campus, on the way to I-280 is a somewhat scenic way back to San Francisco. Depending on time, you may want to go "over the hill" to the Pacific Ocean. Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, or even a trip down to Monterey, Carmel, and Pebble Beach are great drives that are worth it if you have the time.

My addition would be to go to the Rodin Sculpture Garden, I loved it there.  If you have time, go behind the church on the main quad and look for the 5 pines with a plaque in the middle (family plaque for my great granddad and granddad).

the general admission lots are $20.  Lots open I think 5 hours before kick-off.  There is overnight parking in Lot 2 but you need a Lot 2 parking pass to be in Lot 2.

The colored lots are assigned to season ticket holders, but the passes are transferable so you can expect to see a handful on places like StubHub in the weeks before the game.  Other lots are open to the public.

Lots 1, 5, 6 and 11 are paved parking in marked parking stalls (at least I think 5 is now paved in a new lot across from the new concert hall).  Lot 4 is a grass intramural field.  The paved lots have marked stalls and parking in lot 4 is in straight lines. 

The other lots are dirt lots among the trees.  If it matters to you, note the surfaces in these lots are somewhat uneven, with leaves, sticks and the odd hole.  Personally, I love the dirt lots and think they make our tailgating atmosphere special.  There are no marked stalls or lines and one can usually stake out a pretty generous area for tailgating activities. 

The only lot where RV’s or overnight parking are allowed (at least officially) is Lot 2, which they have opened in the past on Thursday afternoon prior to a Saturday game. 

Stanford allows fans to leave and return to the stadium.

If you buy your tickets through U of Utah, your seats will probably be in the northeast corner of the stadium. 

On the map, note the Fan Fest area.  Fan Fest is open to the public and sells beer and wine along with food.
