Wasn't a contra foul; the UCLA player took a direct shot following an ordinary foul from inside 5 meters, which is verboten. And it was CLOSE - a matter of maybe a foot or 18 inches, but the official was standing directly on the 5 meter line. But you're right, that call was absolutely critical.
And the women's water polo team, beyond keeping the streak alive, is one of the most supportive teams of their fellow athletes out there - I remember back at the 2012 women's b-ball regional at Fresno, they all came before and after a tournament of their own in Santa Barbara to cheer at both games, dressed in great costumes - I think it was one of the first appearances of the nerd glasses.
One other thing about the game-tying goal - watch the replay, if you get a chance. The pass from Steffens to set the goal up was absolutely remarkable. And with all of 5 seconds or so left in the period down a goal.
