I don't know for sure, but I would bet the average paycheck of a 6th/7th rounder and a UDFA is basically the same, and I would be the chances of actually making a roster are pretty similar, too.

It's been a while, and I'm too lazy too look it up, but I seem to recall a report that claimed it was preferable to be a free agent rather than a late round pick. The late round picks are drafted after real needs are met, but free agents have their choice of any NFL team (if they are marketing themselves correctly) and can position themselves into better situations than a 7th round pick. That thought crossed my mind as I reviewed the 49er selections. The 7th rounders came to a team with 53 roster players, a practice squad and 9 selections in front of them. Their odds? Not too good.
