Yeah, it's ludicrous. But every time you see the NCAA rules leading to an absurd result like this, it's probably because somebody tried to cheat by doing something along these lines. I'll bet some overzealous booster really did pay football players by using a fake girlfriend to provide pro sports tickets (and other benefits). The NCAA has to try to plug all the loopholes -- and cheaters are endlessly creative, so there are lots of loopholes to plug. The NCAA is stuck trying to police every possible method of cheating, including some really crazy ones. . . .
