I'm not sure rastaman is asking the question you're answering, BC. He asks why "it was OK," which I'm rightly or wrongly interpreting to mean why is it morally or socially acceptable, not why it's legally acceptable.

I think it is both.  Our Constitutional protections rely on us defending things we object to.  Unless his question is specifically why are people supporting the nickname itself, in which case I have no answer.  As I said, I personally find it offensive.
