I've long been a bigger fan of directors than actors.
Cohen Brothers
Scorsese
Tarantino (hit and miss, but when he hits....wow)
Jason Reitman
Gus Van Sant
Wes Anderson
Woody Allen (his older films from 70s and 80s)
Stanley Kubrick (did he ever make a truly bad film?)
Ridley Scott
Christopher Nolan
Coppola
I will see any movie made by any of these directors with the exception of Woody Allen, who used to be a favorite but IMO has faded quite a bit. Top films is quite a bit more difficult, as the list shifts depending on my mood or the genre. But some names that appear on the list consistently...
Dr. Strangelove
The Godfather Films (I & II)
Alien (prefer the original over II, after that all garbage)
Drugstore Cowboy
Shawshank Redemption
Annie Hall (hasn't aged perfectly, but some scenes are still near perfect and innovative)
A Clockwork Orange
Star Wars, episodes 4 & 5 (or 1 & 2 in order of release)
Pulp Fiction
The Departed
Cohen Brothers
