My wife was out of town with the kids a few weeks back, so I ended up checking out a few films: Boyhood, Chef, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Boyhood was good, but not great. While it was fascinating to see the children grow before our eyes, the story was not very compelling, the writing felt a bit amateurish and some of the acting was stilted, in my opinion. Arquette and her professor husband were particularly bad. The only seen with Arquette that I believed was her final scene at her kitchen table. It was definitely worth seeing for it's uniqueness, but it did little than pass the time for me.
Chef was nice, but predictable and formulaic. Still, Favreau chews up scenery nicely and I liked a lot of the characters. Worth seeing, but not a great film.
Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise pleasure. I actually had no interest in seeing it until a neighbor invited me and I didn't want to be anti-social. Chris Pratt has a lot of charisma and the jokes were so well written and the physician humor, much of it done with animation and live action interplay was very well done. It's by no means a great film, but I must admit, it was the best of the three.
