My guess is that Harbaugh's mercurial personality is the ruling force in his life. It worked at Stanford because emotionalism works on young men. It's less effective in the pro game for a variety of reasons, the greatest being the developed immunity to emotionalism of the players at that level. Their egos are secure (even over-sized) society and their bank accounts tell them they are Gods.
I would hope that Harbaugh finds his place. If his ego could handle it long enough for him to mature some more, I think a long run at a strong college would end up being the best place for him. Probably his rocky relationship with the 49ers front office is the fulcrum that could decide this. That, and a little failure on the field while Michigan simultaneously pleads ( through representatives, all very hush-hush) for JH to send some sort of sign he might be interested.
