In the early 80s we would throw our friends into The Claw on their birthday.  We also dipped into the fountain in front of Green during hot days when studying on the lawn.  Members of the band were the only dedicated fountain hoppers at the time, but people started following them around campus and jumping in with them.  I think that is where the more wide-spread fountain hopping began.  Actually went into the steam tunnels once but didn't make it very far because there was a large tangle of pipes in our way and I couldn't see a thing through my pre-cool nerd nation glasses.  8)
