This is mostly just interesting spin.  Every coach advises his players on the pros and cons of leaving early.  If a coach clearly acts as an advocate, rather than as an independent adviser, the kid will not rely on the coach's recommendation.  The only relatively new piece of the puzzle is that Kelly (and other coaches) can now legally offer to pay for insurance in case the player gets injured.  I am not sure whether I would want Stanford to follow suit.
